How to Barter: 3 Thoughtful Gifts You Can Get Bartering

Learn how to barter & show you care with your time - bobrus

Bartering for gifts is a great way to show you’re willing to put time and effort into finding thoughtful gifts for friends and family. So just because you’re broke (or like to live like it) doesn’t mean you can’t learn how to barter for meaningful presents that will be loved. Swapping for gifts isn't only a great way to save money, it's a smart, low-rent way to show you care.

Swap the Past for a Present: Bartering for Gift Scrapbooks

A lovely, heart-felt way to catalog family events and friendships is a custom scrapbook. Bartering for a scrapbook shows how much an event or person means to you, and it makes a beautiful gift laden with sentiment and emotional value. Not only is scrapbooking a popular hobby with young and old alike (so it's relatively easy to find everyday people open to bartering), there are small businesses that specialize in scrapbooking who are probably open to a barter exchange too.

When bartering for presents like scrapbooks, you'll need to take the time to gather photos and small souvenirs, and be willing to share a bit of information about friends, family and events with your scrapbooker. This will help her put more meaning and "story" in your gift, making it the unique and special gift you want it to be and a memorable gift that is sure to be enjoyed for years (if not decades) after you've given it.

Creative Gift Bartering: How to Barter for Custom Art

There's a reason they're called "starving artists." As unfair as it may seem, there are plenty of talented, skilled and hard-working artists out there who are willing (or forced) to barter their talent and time. So, if you're willing to fairly compensate them, bartering for custom art objects is a brilliant way to give friends and family one-of-a-kind gifts that could even appreciate in value over time.

Not sure what sort of art to swap for? Think about the person you're bartering for: Do they enjoy gardening? You could barter with an artist who works in metals for a unique garden sculpture or lawn ornament. Are you bartering for gifts for a new mother, grandmother or father? Then consider swapping for a gift portrait from a painter or skilled sketch artist. Or maybe you know someone who just bought a home or moved. Swap for a wall hanging or painting that matches their new decor. Not sure what present to barter for? Start off your bartering by asking the artist for suggestions: Artists are creative folks to begin with, so they're sure to give a few thoughtful gift suggestions.

When swapping for gifts of custom art, you'll need to find swap-friendly artists to choose from and, more importantly, you'll need to have an idea of the fair value of that artist's time and materials. Expect a wide range of values when bartering for art, depending on an artist's medium and popularity. Sure, you're probably looking for a bargain (who isn't?) but it's important that you still respect the artist's training and craft.

Picture This: How to Barter for Photographic Gifts

Who wouldn't love to have a family portrait done by a professional photographer? Or to have a special event filmed or photographed? The nice thing about swapping for gifts like photography and videography is that it's an adaptable present that lends itself to a seemingly endless number of life events. Whether you have friends getting married, celebrating their 50th anniversary, or graduating from high school, swapping for this gift gives your friends a way to remember their special moments (and you at the same time). Barter for photography and you're sure to give a one-of-a-kind present that will be remembered for years to come, especially if you also barter for an accompanying photograph album.

How to Barter: Learning the Fine Art of Bartering

Whether or not you’re short on money, swapping for gifts is a wonderful way to find thoughtful gifts year round. Worried you don’t have any skills worth bartering for or don't know how to barter to begin with? You shouldn't. Everyone has a skill worth bartering. Can you do taxes, give a car a tune up, or give a great hair cut? Then you've got a skill a worth bartering. Can you walk a dog, run errands, or keep a clean house? Then you do too. Remember, bartering is less about things and more about people: just find swap-friendly websites, businesses and people open to bartering and you're sure to work out a deal from there. And the more you barter, the better you'll get at it. So just learn how to barter from swap-friendly pros and you'll be a master barterer in no time.

Amid the recent focus on electronic gadgets, several sources are reporting a comeback for the likes of Lego and collectable toys as Christmas gifts this year.

Budget Constraints mean Simple Gifts

British newspaper The Telegraph reports that budget constraints have meant parents have cut back on fancy electronic gifts and opted for more ‘traditional’ toys instead. These include games, such as Monopoly, or stuffed toys such as Sylvanian Families.

Overall, the average price of the projected most-popular toys has fallen, with The Telegraph citing British retalier Sainsbury's as cutting the price of all toys by 50 percent.

CNBC reports that lower-priced toys are popular this year. It also states that a trend is toward buying collectable items, such as Zoobles, Squinkies and Sing-A-Ma-Jigs.

Lego, a best-seller

But Lego seems to be the big winner as a result of this year’s trend.

Walmart reports that a relatively cheap Lego set is the number one selling toy for online shoppers.

This claim has been backed by Amazon.com’s rankings, in which Lego is excelling.

In their best-sellers list, in the toys and games category, Lego products are first and second, with the “Sigma 3 Remote Controlled Helicopter” in third place.

Amazon's Best-Sellers

Further examination of Amazon’s best-sellers list is revealing.

In electronics, the “Kindle” is number one and two, with the “iPod Touch” third.

In movies, “Inception” comes in first and third, with its box-set and DVD editions respectively. The “Despicable Me” DVD is third.

The “Canon EOS Rebel T2i” is the best selling camera. The “Flip Ultra HD” video camera is third and Canon is also third in this category with the “Powershot SD 1300”.

The top three video games are “Just Dance 2” for the Wii, “Call of Duty: Black Ops” for the X-Box, and “Donkey Kong Country Returns” – also for the Wii.

Most Popular Books

The George W. Bush penned “Decision Point” is the hottest selling book on Amazon, with the “Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1” second and “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption” third.

USA Today also ranks “Decision Point” as the top-selling book, with other top-sellers being “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth” and the Tom Clancy, Grant Blackwood novel “Dead or Alive” also high on the list.

Meanwhile, KTXS News reports that the hottest selling toy is the "Kinect" game system. Walmart also reports this is the second-most popular selling toy, behind the Lego set.

Consumer Spending

Overall, according to Gallup, consumer spending in the USA is about on-par with that of a year ago., but that level of spending has been relatively lower in the past few years. However, this data considers overall spending, not just Christmas purchases.

Coasteering Adventure Experience - Helen Smeaton

If you think that couple gifts should only be for anniversaries then think again. Presents bought for two people rather than one can make your Christmas budget go further and they are the perfect solution for hard-to-buy-for people like in laws, or serious boyfriends and girlfriends, as you can just buy couple gifts for Christmas that they will both love.

Christmas Present Ideas for Couples

Before you start making your Christmas gift list, think about the type of present each couple might need, want or like to have. For instance, if they are an adventurous couple, they may love a weird and wacky gift experience, or if they have just set up home together, they may relish some cool items for the house.

On the other hand, if they have been together for a long time, they may prefer something personalized to remind them just how long they have been a couple.

Personalized Couples Gift Ideas

These personalized couples gift ideas are both fun and practical:

  • Caricature portrait – pull out some old photos of the couple and have one made into a caricature; there are plenty of online sites like Caricature King, where all you need is a digital photo; they do the rest.
  • Hand drawn portrait – if it’s an older couple like your grandparents, a hand-drawn portrait may be more appropriate; easily done again just by sending a digital image over the internet to a company like PaintYourLife.
  • Build a website– a great gift for an older couple as a home for photographic memories, and cheap, as all it costs is your time! Use a free hosting company like Yola to make a simple website that they can then update and add to; just make sure they have a home computer before you start!
  • Private dance lesson – a romantic idea for a couple gift, sure to please anyone hooked on the TV show Strictly Come Dancing; it's also a fun way to lose a few pounds post Christmas!

Cool Holiday Gifts for Couples

For people who have just set up home or for friends that are difficult to buy for individually, these cool holiday gifts for couples are practical and look great around the home:

  • iPod docking station – almost everyone owns an iPod but how many own a cool docking station? Consider the sleek Klipsch docking station pictured below; it packs a powerful punch when it comes to quality music and sounds as good as a Bang and Olufsen at a much cheaper price.
  • Magimix food processor – perfect for want-to-be master chefs and a real time saver.

Fun Couples Christmas Presents

Looking for something original and totally different? How about fun couples Christmas presents like these?

  • Teepee retreat – buy an overnight gift experience staying in a teepee; combine it with horse riding or mountain biking if they are energetic, or an evening massage followed by a candlelit outdoor supper.
  • Driving experience – forget the boring Ferrari; book them a tank driving experience instead!
  • Ride on the world’s fastest roller coaster – yes this one will cost money as you have to get them to Abu Dhabi and Ferrari World but they will have the ride of their lives!

Or consider the following:

For Adventurous Couples – Buy Gift Experiences

Balloon rides and spa weekends immediately spring to mind, but how about these unusual alternatives for adventurous couples:

  • Indoor skydiving – highly popular flying in a wind tunnel and, with many 2 for 1 offers from companies like Red Letter Days, good value for money too.
  • Coasteering – an activity that originated in Wales, it involves traversing terrain close to the sea by swimming, clambering over rocks and jumping off high points.
  • Zorbing – known also as sphering, couples race each other downhill transported in a huge plastic ball. Now available worldwide, this could be the perfect gift for couples planning on going to New Zealand to watch the Rugby World Cup in 2011, as the original Zorb track can be found in Rotorua.
  • Schweebing – and if they are planning to visit Rotorua anyway , buy the couple a voucher for Schweebing (see this article to find out what is a schweeb!)

Best Christmas Gifts for Couples

The best Christmas gifts for couples will depend largely on their interests, but there is sure to be an adventure experience or cool household item that will suit their tastes. Just use the above ideas as inspiration for your 2010 couple gifts.

Fun And Easy Ways To Shop For & Save Money On Christmas Gifts

Nov 8, 2010 Amy Wingfield

Save Money - Simon Howden

Save Money - Simon Howden

In these tough financial times, families struggle to put food on the table. Many are facing this crisis by learning how to save money, earn extra income and incentives online, shop online, watch for sales and network together by sharing what they learn along the way. This has created a phenomenon of coupon blogs, facebook pages and internet sites all devoted to teaching others how to save money.

Shop Online and Shop Early

Twenty or thirty years ago, the biggest shopping day of the year was the day after Thanksgiving, otherwise known as Black Friday. With the financial crisis of the last few years, that has changed. Many retailers have already began running " Black Friday Sales," in hopes of gaining a profit earlier this year as the economy begins to improve.

However, retailers may find that the past few years of economic hardship have given birth to a new generation of savy shoppers who have learned in times of financial crisis to network together and get the most from their hard earned money. There are websites like BlackFridayAds.com who completely devoted to upcoming sales and deals throughout the holiday shopping season, especially those sales occurring the day after Thanksgiving. Several blogs and facebook pages have been established by women who have learned the value of sharing a good thing with others. Facebook groups like Deal Divas notify group members by email of sales, deals and freebies found by members throughout the day.

Many consumers have learned to shop early and shop online first before getting in the car and driving to the store. Retailers are catching on to this trend. Many retailers are offering free shipping or reduced shipping on their websites for their hottest selling items. Online store retailers like Amazon and Walmart.com entice consumers to return to their sites often with , " Daily Deals."

Buy Used And Save The Difference

The economy may be improving, but consumers are still being cautious when it comes to high ticket items. Many consumers will first search websites like Ebay and Craigslist for desired items before checking local stores. In past generations, it was considered impolite or tacky to re-gift or give someone something second hand. That's no longer the case.

Ebay sellers often advertise their goods by using the acronym EUC, ( Excellent Used Condition). The item may be used and no longer in its original packaging, but in many cases, items found on Ebay are " Like New" items and will be well received by satisfied consumers. Beware though, always read all the information about an auction before bidding and make note of shipping cost for each item. Shipping can be expensive and sometimes it is cheaper to buy an item new at a retail store than to by it used on Ebay and pay high shipping charges.

There are other ways to find gently used goods. Some shoppers enjoy bargain shopping through Thrift stores, consignment shops, The Good Will and the Salvation Army. This is a great way to save money on clothes, toys, books, furniture, dishes, linens and small kitchen appliances. Others flock to garage sales. Many cities and communities are learning the value of networking together by hosting semi-annual or annual state highway garage sales. In the south, the bi-annual Hwy 80 Garage sale runs in April and again in October.

The sale spans over 390 miles along historic Hwy 80 from Grand Prairie, Texas to Jackson, Mississippi. bargain hunters from around the country make these sales a big " road trip," adventure. Many communities throughout the nation are picking up on this trend. To find a list of some of the big ones, try searching Google for city wide and highway yard sales.

Getting Things For Free

A pessimist might say that nothing is ever free. However Freecycle participants might disagree. Many consumers have decided not to play the garage sale game or list their used goods on Ebay or Craigslist. Instead, items are given away for free through an online resource known nationwide as Freecycle. Freecycle is so popular now that there is usually a group to be found in almost every major city in America. Group members post the items they have to "Offer," or things, " Wanted." this is a good way to give clothes and furniture and toys to families in need.

Consumers are also finding there are more, "freebies," to be found.A search engine by the name of Swagbucks rewards consumers with swagbucks for using their search tool instead of another search engine like Google or Yahoo. Consumers save up these swagbuck credits and cash them in for free gift cards and other incentives. Swagbucks is especially popular on Fridays, which is known as Mega Swagbucks day. This is the day to earn lots of swagbucks quickly just by searching the web.

Make Shopping a Game

This Christmas, make a Christmas shopping plan. Create a game plan and tackle that Christmas shopping list with enthusiasm. Challenge family members and friends to see who can find the best deals and save the most money on gifts this year. Take notes and share strategies with one another to be used year after year. The nice part about this game is, in the end, everyone is a winner!

Top Christmas Toys & Gifts For Boys

Nov 3, 2010 Amy Wingfield

Gifts For Boys - Christiaan Briggs

Gifts For Boys - Christiaan Briggs

Most boys own a laptop or a game systems like the Wii, DSi, PS3, or Xbox. Some still like traditional toys like Legos and models. Consider gifts that will add to their existing software and hobbies.

Great Gift Ideas For Boys Ages 8-18

This year the biggest thing to hit the market is the new Xbox Kinect. Basically, what this new $150 expansion part does is take an Xbox and turn it into a Wii giving the Xbox motion and sensor capabilities to play action games just like the Wii. It will come standard in all new Xbox 360 machines this year. However, if the child already has an Xbox, be prepared to shell out $150 for the new gadget.

This year will be a movie year. Disney Pixar Cars is still really popular and Disney has brought out a whole new line of Cars character including a stream of new Mater characters like Monster Truck Mater. Even Lego has jumped into Disney character business. There are Disney Cars and Toy Story 3 Lego play sets available this year for children ages 2-7.

Speaking of Toy Story 3, it was just released on DVD this past week and Disney is hoping to cash in on the profits with all kinds of toys and merchandise related to the movie. Also, action pack thrillers were very popular this year including Iron Man and Transformers. Many boys will be asking for Iron Man masks and Transformer robots. Two new movies are on their way. The New Harry Potter movie will be out next month and the creator of Star Wars plans to release all the movies once again. This time in 3D.

Legos and Building Sets

Legos and building sets have been about as traditional as cars, trucks and plastic soldiers when it comes to gifts boys love to receive. However Lego has taken their toys to the next level with a new line of Lego board games this year and an online game called Lego Universe. There are many options when choosing a lego set. There are collector pieces for boys and men of all ages. Some boys prefer the traditional bucket of legos while some want the latest Harry Potter or Star Wars set. From medieval knights and castles to build your own robots and city sets, there is a lego set for everyone and every interest.

Family Board Games

This year, two new electronic games have hit the market. One is Mindflex. It was suppose to be released last year. Manufacturers must have worked out all the bugs because it is definitely a hot seller this year. It's a fun game where the harder one concentrates the greater the reward. The second game is called Loopz. It's similar to the old game Simon. It's a game that tests quick reflexes and memory skills.

Other Things to Consider When Choosing Gifts

Choosing a gift for a boy takes a little guesswork. Is the boy all about computers and gaming systems or would he rather be outside playing sports? Some never go anywhere without their Ripstick or skate boards. Others are lost without their iPod or DSi. Do the research, and if all else fails buy a gift card or put cash in a Christmas card. Letting them choose their own gift always makes them happy!

As much as state attorneys general could be an effective force in acting for consumers and investors against banks, the fact that an attorney general has saddled up does not necessarily mean the effort is serious. At a minimum, it might just be a gambit to garner some good PR without inconveniencing the perps seriously;at worse, the action might be a pure Trojan horse.

Consider the conduct of one Bill McCollum, the blade duck attorney-general of Florida curious. It appears that McCollum has been going after the foot soldiers in the foreclosure business chicanery (although some of them, like David Stern, head of the biggest foreclosure mill in the state, have earned a tidy fortune). His recent actions have targeted firms offering dubious foreclosure advice, and more recently, the foreclosure mills as well as a firm that may be best known for its real estate related paper manufacturing activities, Lender Processing Services, through its subsidiary DocX.

Now starting with these actors isn't a bad thing at all. in fact, prosecutors often target low level criminals with the hope of getting them to turn evidence on the kingpins. And there is good reason to think McCollum has no interest in asking tough questions that will inconvenience bigger fry.

McCollum Is falling in with the banking industry party line. He appears to gaze not disrupting the foreclosure process, a top priority of the financial, as a worthy goal. Gee, isn't ain't preserving the rule of law and making sure no one is abused or defrauded the sort of thing his office is tasked to defend, not the functioning of markets or the bottom lines of banks? From the Wall Street Journal (hat tip f247 reader):

"They're training a lot of new people, and apparently now they are comfortable with the legality of their foreclosure process," Mr. McCollum said in an interview."The primary purpose of these meetings is talking about not having this stuff held back."It's very important for us to not have a backlog of foreclosures. We already have a backlog."We don't want it to get worse."…

Mr. McCollum, Florida's attorney general, said most errors in the foreclosure process have been "procedural," adding that his top priority is to resolve the mess in a way that allows to resume quickly… foreclosures.

The talks also centered on how to quickly get the foreclosure process moving again, according to the Florida attorney general's office. Mr. McCollum described the meeting as more combative than cooperative.

Let's look at the timeline:

August 10: McCollum announces investigation of foreclosure mills.McCollum also happens to be running for governor as a Republican and facing a tough opponent in the primaries. One must wonder whether this investigation was a Hail Mary pass to bolster his candidacy

August 24: Florida primary, McCollum loses to Rick Scott

September 3: McCollum asks if he can resume being a lobbyist once he leaves office.Per the St. Petersburg Times:

Barely a week after he lost the Republican primary for governor, Attorney General Bill McCollum sought legal advice on whether he can lobby the governor's office and Cabinet - the very people he works with now - after he leaves office in January.

The answer: No..

He'll have to wait two years before he can collect fees to represent private clients before the state government that has employed him the past oven years…He asked the Commission on Ethics not to reveal his name as the person making the inquiry, but the agency did anyway….

McCollum's Sept. 3 letter to the Commission on Ethics noted that state law and the Constitution already bar him from his current agency, the attorney general's office for two years after leaving office in January… lobbying.

But because the attorney general also is a member of the Cabinet, McCollum asked "what entities" are also covered by the lobbying restrictions.

The attorney general, as a cabinet member, reservations on a variety of boards overseeing the state pension fund, environmental, land use and other issues.

In its opinion, the ethics Committee said: "one's public service career and contacts developed in that capacity should not be used to enrich oneself at the expense of the public (and) the provision was intended to prevent influence peddling and the use of public office to create opportunities for personal profit through lobbying once an official leaves office."….

McCollum, a lawyer who served for 20 years in Congress, listed a net worth of $1.3 million in 2009.He collects $82,000 annually as a congressional pension.

For several years after he left Congress, McCollum was a $400, 000 - a - year lobbyist for the Baker Hostetler law firm.

It's also worth noting that the biggest foreclosure mill targeted, the Daniel Stern law firm, has hired Republicans to defend it. Per FireDogLake heavyweight:

David Stern has already become fairly well known to the media as a high-volume foreclosure servicer - a foreclosure mill. What's not as well known is that David Stern's legal representation, Tew Cardenas, is rather important to Florida's Republican Party. While Jeffrey Tew has donated only was rather limited basis to candidates, Alberto Cardenas has donated more than $70,000 to candidates, incumbents and committees during the last two election cycles....

Among Cardenas' beneficiaries are Rep.Roy Blunt (MO - 07) and Rep.John Mica (FL-07), who respectively sit on the House Energy and Commerce Committee (Blunt), House Permanent Subcommittee on investigations (Blunt), and House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (Mica), and the House Committee on transportation and infrastructure (Mica is the ranking member). His family members are likewise generous to Republicans and have donated more than $9000 over the last several years.

Unfortunately, this case study illustrates yet again the dangers of taking headlines at face value.
